The Sleeping Ute - slumbering on now above a neon sign that flashes “Hot Slots, Craps, Bingo” - is still in his sight and his psyche. Lang is now a sober 31-year-old father who directs a recreational program for Ute children and is finishing a master’s degree. He admits there were years when he hardly noticed it. The landmark that dominates the horizon in this far southwest corner of Colorado was there when Lang flunked out of college after too much partying. It gave him strength when he was a high school basketball standout in nearby Cortez, struggling with prejudice even as he carried the team.
